How can I tell if a job is a scam?

These are the usual danger signs:

  • recruiting a suspiciously large number of teachers
  • suspiciously good conditions (especially if the job is offered to people with no teaching experience)
  • jobs in Europe that don't ask for qualifications or experience
  • offering jobs to teachers from developing countries who can't usually get working visas
  • offering jobs in the EU to Americans with little experience
  • asking for copies of certificates early in the application process
  • asking for original certificates
  • the company using email addresses from providers like Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo
  • no address or telephone number on the website
  • the whole company seeming to be run by one person
  • not contacting your job references before they offer you a job
  • a shoddy website
  • no website
  • asking for money from you

Never send money to anyone - recruiters will be paid by the school and genuine schools will pay all visa expenses. Only send originals of certificates once you have confirmed that it is the usual process in that country and have received a signed contract.
